Annual 4th & 5th Grade Spelling Bee

On January 21st, the Junior Woman’s Club of Rutherford hosted the 6th Annual Spelling Bee.  Liz Gilmore chaired the event and ensured it’s success.   Rutherford students, in 4th and 5th Grade, were invited to participate in the event which was held at the Union School Auditorium.   Many students may have arrived feeling nervous about the competition, but by the end of the night they certainly should have felt a boost of confidence.  This impressive group of children demonstrated great sportsmanship along with an impressive vocabulary.   The entire audience was engaged and eager to see who would ultimately win the competition.
Morgan Sherlock took first place, Jillian Griggs took second place and Aaron Zhao came in third place.  All of the participants were viewed as winners because their love of reading, their advanced vocabulary skills and their desire to consistently do their best was proudly displayed during this competition.

Read Across America
The nationwide reading celebration took place in March, on the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.  Across the country thousands of schools, libraries, community centers and more participate by bringing together kids and books!!!

The Education Department donated Dr. Seuss books to each of the elementary schools in town.

Girl's Career Institute

Each year, the club sponsors two High School Juniors as its delegates to attend Girls Career Institute at Douglass College.  The Institute takes place on the Douglass College Campus of Rutgers University in June.

The Girls Career Institute is a unique and life changing experience for young women from all over the state.  It provides them with a taste of college life, the opportunity to live in a dormitory, and to meet delegates from all over the state.  More importantly, it offers them an opportunity to learn of the many career options available to young women today.

Our selected delegates for 2009 were Angela Palanza and Brianne Boyle.  Congratulations!
We will invite them to one of our monthly meetings in the Fall to let us know what they thought about their experiences.
