“There are certain things in our nation and in the world which I am proud to be maladjusted and which I hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted until the good societies realize — I say very honestly that I never intend to become adjusted to — segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry.”

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We would like to express our outrage over the recent firebombing of the Schuman family's home in Rutherford and offer support to them in word and deed. Violent headlines are all too familiar when reading about world events or even other parts of the country. We do not expect in our community to hear police helicopters overhead and later read about a man and wife waking up to a Molotov cocktail landing on their bed engulfing it in flames. This was not a prank or a benign act of prejudice. A family home with children inside was attacked. No one wants to think about what could have happened but we must confront the facts and speak out against this hateful, extremist behavior.
