{"id":4131,"date":"2020-04-16T16:00:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T20:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rutherfordschools.org\/?p=4131"},"modified":"2020-04-16T15:56:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T19:56:27","slug":"message-from-mr-hurley-april-16-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rutherfordschools.org\/blog\/message-from-mr-hurley-april-16-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Message from Mr. Hurley April 16, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Rutherford School Community,<\/p>\n<p>I hope you are doing well as we continue\u00a0working together through the health emergency.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, classes via distance\u00a0learning will\u00a0resume on Monday, April 20.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Murphy announced\u00a0today\u00a0that school buildings will remain closed until at least\u00a0May 15.<\/p>\n<p>The administration,\u00a0teachers, and staff have and will be continuing to meet virtually\u00a0on a regular basis on many topics which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The further enhancement and refinement of distance learning programs, activities, and expanded use of video conferencing.\u00a0Virtual\u00a0meetings are being held on grade levels, departments, and building wide.<\/li>\n<li>The continued\u00a0focus on wellness and social emotional learning.<\/li>\n<li>The reopening of registration\u00a0for incoming Kindergarteners\u00a0and new students who will start school in September\u00a02020.<\/li>\n<li>The fate of summer programs\u2014Summer Enrichment Academy (formerly JumpStart) Summer Stem, and Summer Music. Will we be allowed to hold these if schools don&#8217;t reopen this\u00a0year?\u00a0 When will we\u00a0resume registration in anticipation of running programs.<\/li>\n<li>How ESY programs for Special Education students will be held.<\/li>\n<li>While we are hopeful that we may be able to return to school, we are planning on how to proceed with end-of-the year activities. From the celebrations\u00a0of graduation, to the need to collect\u00a0books and equipment from\u00a0students and teachers and have students and teachers\u00a0get their personal belongings\u00a0still in school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list of present imperatives and the list of rapidly approaching events are all being discussed and planned\u00a0on many tiers ranging from best case to worst case scenarios. As plans\u00a0are finalized\u00a0they will be shared\u00a0by building\u00a0principals with students and parents.<\/p>\n<p>I miss the nearly\u00a03000 faculty, staff and students\u00a0who fill the\u00a0buildings\u00a0every day with energy, enthusiasm, success, joys, perseverance and\u00a0progress. I miss it all and I know you do as well. I know that our students\u00a0miss school, their teachers, and their classmates probably\u00a0more than they ever imagined they would. I spent most of my career in the High School\u00a0as a teacher, a coach, and a principal. I know\u00a0the excitement\u00a0 of spring sports, concerts, prom,\u00a0and graduation. As superintendent, I have seen\u00a0on every grade level and every building\u00a0that the end of the year brings a sense of excitement,\u00a0accomplishment, and celebration. I want to see our\u00a0students, faculty, staff and parents experience\u00a0those\u00a0feelings and celebrate those significant moments.<\/p>\n<p>The uncertainty\u00a0is hard. We prepare\u00a0for a return while we\u00a0prepare for what to do if we can&#8217;t\u00a0return. Spring sports, concerts, social events and\u00a0class projects may be\u00a0 temporarily suspended\u00a0or\u00a0gone for this year, but we\u00a0continue to work together on a different game\u00a0plan,\u00a0score, and\u00a0project. We have\u00a0followed the social\u00a0distancing\u00a0guidelines. We have put others before ourselves.\u00a0We have banded together to make school\u00a0lessons meaningful and to ensure that\u00a0our children and students are getting the best opportunities that\u00a0distance learning\u00a0can provide. We\u00a0all have modeled for the children\u00a0and it is\u00a0no surprise that the students have modeled for us, flexibility, responsibility,\u00a0teamwork, adaptability, and industry.
